Central Corridor Gamers and Groundswell Open House!

As the season change, Central Corridor Gamers (CCG) and Groundswell are shaking off the winter dust and opening the doors to families and people of all ages for Wednesday evenings of games, snacks, friends, and fun!

You are cordially invited to Groundswell on Saturday, April 2nd from 1-4 pm to explore the past, present, and future of CCG.

Located at 225 K. Ave. NW, Groundswell not only offers CCG a place to call home but also provides a place for youth, artists, and musicians to gather and share their talents with the Time Check neighborhood and the Cedar Rapids community as a whole.

Beginning this April, Wednesday evenings at Groundswell will come alive with the sounds of trading cards clicking and dice rolling.

For those too young to participate in the gaming part of our night, we will offer adult directed craft activities, flower planting in the spring, no-bake snack preparation, puzzles, and free-form crafting. Occasionally we will have a storybook time with related craft activities.

With all of this fun going on, why would you even think of passing up this opportunity? It will be fun for kids and grown-ups alike. Please stop by to see us on April 2nd to gather information, ask questions, and see the building. Light refreshments will be provided and CCG staff will be on hand to teach about their games and give out information.

For more information about CCG or the Open House, feel free to get in touch with Dan Alpers (CCG President) or Amy Anderson (CCG Representative) by calling (319) 363-5799.

Local Photographer Seth Walters needs your help!

Seth Walters one of Canman’s favorite local photographers needs some help! This info comes from his Kickstarter page.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Seth Walters is an Iowa based photographer specializing in HDR or High Dynamic Range photography. New York in HDR is Seth’s 1st themed exhibit. In October of 2010 Seth visited New York for the first time and was changed forever. He had only hoped that he would be able to photographically capture the beauty and energy of New York. The result of what was captured by Seth will be publicly displayed in a free exhibition in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. These works are best seen printed in large format. The detail in each image is so great that they are not justified by a computer screen.

Printing these images in the sizes that are needed to present in full potential is not cheap. That’s where you come in. But your contribution is not a charity, each pledge will result in a “reward” relating to this exhibit. Take a look at the rewards section to see what your contribution will get you.

Check out these websites to see some of the work that will be shown. Then imagine them 10 times larger!

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this project. It’s been a dream of mine to show these images in their full potential and with your help that can be a possibility.

A Unique Valentine’s Tradition Starts in Cedar Rapids: Circle of Ash

[caption id="attachment_2162" align="alignright" width="228" caption="Our favorite Zombie Alisabeth!"][/caption]

Cedar Rapids, IA – January 27th, 2011 – On the evenings of Friday
February 11th, and Saturday February 12th, the twisting and turning
maze of Circle of Ash Haunted Attraction will be filled with zombies
of all sorts.  Those two nights Circle of Ash will present “Be My
Zombie” in celebration of the Valentine’s Day Weekend.

“As much as we love all the mushy, romantic stuff that takes place for
Valentine’s, we really felt there was a need for something different,”
explained Mark Fuller, the Volunteer Marketing Lead for Circle of Ash.
“Frankly, the chocolate melts and the teddy bears just looked better
with fake blood on them anyway, so why not celebrate this ‘Hallmark
Holiday’ in the best way we know how? Scaring people!”, Mark
continued.

“Be My Zombie” is the sophomore effort to the off-season haunted
attraction show which Circle of Ash produced in association with the
Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival in the summer of 2010 entitled “Red,
White and Boo!”.  However, “Be My Zombie” will be different from
either the summer production or the Halloween production of Circle of
Ash.  “All of our shows are different.” said Ian Austin, Technical
Director for the Circle of Ash.  “We are always changing, always
improving our show.  “After each run, we sit down with the cast and
crew and ask, ‘How can we make this better?’.  We leave with hundreds
of ideas from those conversations, put together a plan, and start
making the changes.  We work on Circle of Ash nearly every single day
of the year. ”

Something else is different, too.  “This is the first time that we
have been solely set on one type of ‘Monster’,” said Austin.  “Zombies
have been around our haunt off and on over the years, but we never
have put them in the spotlight.  There will be different types of
zombies, but every character you encounter will be from the undead.”

Circle of Ash is a theatrical-style haunted attraction, located at 412
7th Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids, west of the medical district.  Guests
guide themselves through the haunt, where they will encounter dozens
of characters ready to greet them.
